5 SF 49ers with expiring contracts who haven’t helped themselves in 2020
No. 5: SF 49ers Safety Jaquiski Tartt
Safety Jaquiski Tartt is one of the team’s most impactful players.
When he’s actually on the field.
Tartt’s inability to stay healthy is basically the only reason why the team will probably not be looking to retain him further than this season. He has been one of the team’s smartest and savvy defenders over the years, but when you’re paying a player close to $7 million a year and he isn’t on the field for most of the season, it may be better to just move on from him.
Tartt missed 19 regular-season games between 2017 and 2019, and a turf-toe injury ended his 2020 campaign after just seven games.
I don’t doubt Tartt will be signed almost instantly by another big team, but the SF 49ers will be in salary cap hell if they don’t shed certain salaries this offseason. That starts with Tartt, who although a very good player in his own right, is dead weight if he can’t be present on game day.
Look for the team to sign someone in free agency or draft a cheaper option at the strong safety position.
