No. 4: Deebo Samuel helps set up SF 49ers’ game-winning field goal
Los Angeles did a good job limiting San Francisco’s rushing efforts in the second half, meaning quarterback Nick Mullens was going to be responsible for delivering some much-needed passing attempts down the stretch to both tie things up and take the lead.
The SF 49ers didn’t want the game to go to overtime, of course, meaning Mullens’ rapport with Deebo Samuel was going to be tested on their final offensive drive with the game knotted up at 20 apiece.
Facing a 3rd-and-2 and on the Niners’ 28-yard line, Mullens hit Samuel on an inside slant pattern in one-on-one coverage. Samuel was able to haul in the catch and break free from the defender, picking up a much-needed 24 yards in the process:
That play got San Francisco into Rams territory at the 48-yard line, and a follow-up 7-yard pass from Mullens to Samuel helped the SF 49ers get into the cusp of field-goal range.
From there, it was just a manner of inching closer.
Yet this clutch play from Samuel to pick up 24 yards was easily one of the most important ones from Sunday’s outing, and one could easily argue the Niners lose this Week 12 matchup if Samuel doesn’t go off.
Chances are he’ll appear again on this list.
