SF 49ers Cornerback Target No. 1: Patrick Surtain II, Alabama

The son of former All-Pro NFL cornerback Patrick Surtain, Patrick Surtain II looks set to follow in his footsteps and become an NFL cornerback in his own right.

Surtain II looks to be in the mold of Richard Sherman. Both are a good size and have a good football IQ, but are not especially quick or what you would call fast.

But as Sherman showed, you don’t need speed to be a good corner. Surtain II would be coming to a good home in San Francisco where Sherman can show him how to get the most out of the assets he does possess, should the latter stick around of course.

The fact Surtain II is big but not particularly fast or agile means he’s more suited to a coverage system in the NFL like what the SF 49ers have. His skill set could have him be the perfect player to pick up the mantle from Sherman when he retires or moves to safety.

Surtain II looks like a safe bet for the Niners to develop as a corner in 2021 and beyond.
