No. 3: SF 49ers Running Back Austin Walter

As mentioned, the running back position group has been extra decimated by injuries to their ranks. Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman and Jeff Wilson Jr. were the top three backs on the depth chart and all of them have spent varied time on the injury report this season.

With these injuries to key backs, the SF 49ers have had to call up players from the practice squad. With that, rookie JaMycal Hasty got activated to the 53-man roster and was thrust into a significant role.

Unfortunately though in the game against New Orleans, Hasty suffered a broken collarbone as the No. 2 option behind Jerick McKinnon.

Therefore, another player recently activated from the practice squad who should see more snaps at running back is Austin Walter.

Walter saw just one rush for 3 yards against the Saints, but he flashed some exceptional burst on a 27-yard catch-and-run play, too, showing he can at least be something of a versatile piece in San Francisco’s offense.

With Mostert, Coleman and Wilson potentially not returning in the immediate future, testing Walter has no negatives.
