Special teams and offensive miscues derailed the SF 49ers’ hopes to upset the Saints in Week 10, and here’s how the thought process panned out.

  • Well, it’s time for some more SF 49ers football.
  • It’s going to be a very big ask for the SF 49ers to go back into the dome and beat the Saints.

But hopefully, there can be some respectability and maybe even the chance for an upset.

  • The Niners to start with the ball, and it’s Nick Mullens time.
  • And the first play results in Jerick McKinnon being tackled literally the moment he carried the ball.
  • I get very nervous when Mullens throws down the field, that was lucky not to be picked.

SF 49ers driving down pretty well down the field, just in short chunks but it’s working.

Ooof, Kendrick Bourne gets pegged in the helmet pretty hard.

  • Touchdown! Brandon Aiyuk gets the score on a massively impressive drive!
  • That was the best drive from San Francisco all season in my opinion. Perfectly executed.

  • Is Aiyuk having a better rookie season than Deebo Samuel? It’s pretty close.
  • Can the defense keep this up?

Geez, they actually can. Saints can’t even get a first down.

Can the SF 49ers go up by two scores?

Ugh, I actually liked the play to do a sweep by Aiyuk, but again the Saints shut down the run first up.

49ers wave the white flag on that drive, not as good as this time around.

    MUFFED PUNT!

    49ers ball!

All the breaks going to San Francisco early.

Ugh, a holding penalty disrupts the drive.

SF 49ers slowly going down the field, great work getting the job done.

Ugh, another hit with the helmet by the Saints. Just stop it.

That’s the second time this quarter.

Sacked on third down, but they still should be able to get up 10-0 as the first quarter ends.

Robbie Gould does indeed kick the field goal to begin the second quarter, 10-0 it is.

Defense will be nice and fresh, can they keep the momentum going?

Ugh, good return by the Saints already puts them in field goal territory.

Alvin Kamara broke five tackles to have a run of minus-6 yards. Geez.

  • Wow, Drew Brees is having a shocker of a start.
  • Saints get a quick field goal thanks to the return, and it’s 10-3 for the 49ers.

I have absolutely no problems with Brees struggling like this for the rest of the game. None whatsoever.

  • That’s 2 yards of offense for the Saints so far. Two. They have more points than actual yardage.
  • Can someone do something about Gardner-Johnson? He’s been stopping the 49ers offense on his own.

What a catch by Jordan Reed, he is so good on the rare moments he’s healthy.

49ers were too conservative punting at midfield. Go for it or at least try to get them offside.

You have timeouts, use one if you need but be aggressive.

  • What is Taysom Hill‘s appeal to the Saints exactly? Is he meant to be a quarterback of the future and that’s why they extended him? I don’t see it.
  • Wooo, Jimmie Ward with amazing coverage on third down.
  • And now the SF 49ers muffed the punt. Wow.

Incredible, the Saints are going to have a chance to tie the game off special teams alone. 2020 can go and suck it.

Well, the 49ers defense aren’t going away at least.

ROUGHING THE PASSER ON A SACK!? WHAT!?

    That is corrupt officiating.

Saints are going to tie the game off this call. Absolutely incredible.

Saints touchdown. The refs are absolutely abysmal.

10-10. This game has no right being a tie.

I am actually so angry right now, I had to delete a swear word twice because I forgot it was going to get edited out anyway.

McKinnon gets drilled by the defense, this is not going well now.

I love some JaMycal Hasty time at least.

If they hit Brees on that slide, that 15 yards for sure. No penalty for the Saints of course.

It’s seriously vexing how superstars of any sport whether it be NFL, NBA etc. get special treatment as far as calls are concerned.

Two-minute warning, big play call coming on third down.

That was not a good play on third down.

Have to go for it here.

    Horrible fumble. Ugh.

Two goes to get a yard, why not just call Kyle Juszczyk to go bang into the middle?

The Saints wasting no time, and they will take the lead here either via field goal or touchdown.

Saints have the ball to begin the second half too.

Fumble!? Fumble!? Surely an incomplete pass, though.

Nah that’s an incomplete pass. Not a fumble. Good coverage, though.

Ball called back for an incomplete pass.

Why can’t we get an incompetent officiating call our way for crying out loud?

The Saints aren’t happy with the officials, that’s cute.

Brees drops the ball, picks it up and casually tosses it to Kamara. 17-10 to the Saints.

The commentators are so enamored by Brees that they think the Saints did a fumblerooski passing play instead of believing Brees dropped the ball. Could they actually be any more biased?

Screen pass for a long gain called back due to a holding call. Sigh.

Saints will get one more chance here.

The white flag flown and it’s 17-10 to the Saints in the half.

OK, here we go for the second half.

    Brees out? That’s interesting.

Jameis Winston in for the Saints.

No but seriously, WHAT is the appeal with Hill?

So, this is a big chance for the 49ers to gain some momentum.

Another roughing-the-passer call for this game.

Saints are playing dirty. There I said it. That was super late.

    Ugh, another undisciplined flag.

Ugh, an interception by Mullens as it’s thrown right at the linebacker.

Come on, Winston. Turn it over like you always do.

JAVON KINLAW WITH THE FIRST CAREER SACK!

I said it before and I’ll say it again. What is Hill’s appeal again?

SF 49ers still have a chance here. But they need some momentum

    WILL SOMEBODY STOP GARDNER-JOHNSON!?

The exact same blitz by him and it’s still not picked up.

    MUFFED PUNT…but the Saints recover.

Saints driving down the field, a two possession game seems almost an impossibility at this point to come back from.

    Saints in field-goal range now.

End of the third quarter, the 49ers will need something drastic to arrest momentum and make a comeback.

Kerry Hyder with another sack, he has had a decent year.

Another sack with Hyder and Kinlaw teaming up! Hyder disrupted the play and Kinlaw mops it up.

UNBELIEVABLE! WHY WOULD YOU DO A FACEMASK THERE!?

That is pathetic. That’s a benchable offense as far as I’m concerned.

Well it doesn’t cost the SF 49ers, they hold on and it’ll be 20-10.

You can’t fault the defense. Ten of those points came from a muffed punt and an absolutely pathetic roughing the passer call.

Bourne is such a tough customer. He will fight for every ball.

    C.J. Beathard time.

Long deep pass, slightly underthrown but why the hell not?

Mullens is a capable backup when he has the weapons and the blocking, but he isn’t able to do it himself unfortunately.

Ward almost intercepts the ball but drops it, that was desperately needed.

  • A fourth muffed punt in this game, and the Saints recover.
  • Bloody hell.

Kamara scores, and that’s the game.

    So sloppy.

I mean, a loss is good for the NFL Draft I suppose, but upsetting the Saints would have been awesome.

    Mullens back out.

Austin Walter actually makes a play. This is a weird game.

Walter looks like he’s having a good time at least.

Field goal good, 27-13 to the Saints.

Saints get a first down, which will make this very hard now.

Another first down for the Saints, another timeout is burned.

Hill fumbles, and 49ers get the ball!

What. Is. The. Appeal. Of. Taysom. Hill?

Big gain to Reed, there’s a little life here.

    Man, I LOVE Aiyuk.

Interception on a jump ball, and that will be the game.

Bourne is amazing at grabbing contested balls but it was way too underthrown.

Unfortunately, this is probably the final nail in the coffin for Mullens after this year.

dark. Next. 5 prospects 49ers must consider in Round 1 of 2021 NFL Draft

Between the 49ers looking at quarterbacks in the draft and Mullens regressing, it doesn’t look good.

That’ll do it for me today, the Saints win 27-13 and San Francisco falls to 4-6.
