SF 49ers NFL Draft Target No. 5: QB Zach Wilson, BYU

Look, we’re all going to need to have a conversation about whether or not quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is the way forward for the SF 49ers. Cap considerations, the degree of responsibility he deserves for the 49ers’ regression due to his own play and the impact of injuries around him are all important factors.

More from SF 49ers Draft

If the 49ers do go for a new look at quarterback, then they won’t be in the running for Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence or the other quarterbacks jockeying for position atop the NFL Draft rankings.

But BYU’s Zach Wilson, a quarterback who has been raising eyebrows in 2020 and has the ability to excel in head coach Kyle Shanahan’s system, is a prospect that could fit right in with San Francisco.

Standing at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, Wilson has had great success in 2020 for BYU and is increasingly being seen as a big mover in draft boards.

So far, albeit against some weak opposition, Wilson has thrown for 19 touchdowns and ran for seven touchdowns of his own. He plays smart and makes good decisions with the football.

The 49ers have already sent scouts to look at Wilson. It’s not a certainty they’re going to look at drafting a quarterback, but they’re definitely doing their due diligence.

If they look at a quarterback to groom in 2021, Wilson might be the guy the 49ers invest a first-round pick on.
