Round 6: SF 49ers Tight End Charlie Woerner

Tight End. San Francisco 49ers. CHARLIE WOERNER. D-.

Another regressive grade when compared to his first-quarter marks, tight end Charlie Woerner has hardly made a dent in San Francisco’s offensive game plan over the first half of his rookie season.

It shouldn’t be surprising Woerner hasn’t been targeted with a pass yet, as he was one of the team’s worst route-running options during training camp. Granted, that’s not why the SF 49ers drafted him in Round 6, rather hoping for his notable run-blocking abilities to be a factor.

But even those haven’t risen to the surface over these first nine games.

To date, Woerner has seen a mere 48 offensive snaps, which accounts for just eight percent. The run-blocking duties for the position have fallen much more on George Kittle, when he was healthy, and No. 2 tight end Ross Dwelley instead of Woerner. True, Woerner is still making his mark on special teams. And that’s fine.

As far as any major reward the Niners are getting from Woerner, though, it just hasn’t surfaced much at all.

Even for a sixth-round selection, it would have been so much more beneficial for him to at least see the field more.
