Round 5, Pick No. 177 Overall (Compensatory): More SF 49ers cornerback depth with Auburn’s Roger McCreary

Cornerback. Tigers . Roger McCreary. 177. player. 842.

Getting Israel Mukuamu isn’t going to automatically solve all the SF 49ers’ potential needs within the secondary this offseason. And in addition to the Niners possibly losing Richard Sherman, Emmanuel Moseley, Jason Verrett and Ahkello Witherspoon, nickel cornerback K’Waun Williams could also be on the outs via free agency, too.

It’s highly unlikely San Francisco retains Williams’ primary backup, Jamar Taylor, meaning a decent slot option would be in play on day three of the NFL Draft.

And with the compensatory pick awarded to the SF 49ers, they go with a versatile defensive back out of Auburn, Roger McCreary.

At 6-foot-0 and 188 pounds, McCreary already has the flexibility to play both inside and on the boundary, helping guard against defensive injury attrition. His stock is also increasing, too, as he’s netted a college career-best two interceptions on the season to go along with 13 total pass breakups over his two-plus years with the Tigers.

Even if Williams is re-signed, McCreary would be a solid backup capable of thriving in a zone-style system.
