3 reasons SF 49ers lost Week 5 matchup with Dolphins
No. 3: Jimmy Garoppolo does not look like himself
Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was “protected” in the second half of the game, allowing backup C.J. Beathard into the game.
Make no mistake, this was a non-permanent benching of Garoppolo after a horrible half of football.

Garoppolo completed under half his passes in the half and had two interceptions that were both solely his responsibility. He looked skittish in the pocket and looked like he didn’t trust his protection at the time.
The protection has been very disappointing, to say the least this year, and it didn’t hold up against Miami either. But Garoppolo’s interceptions were a result of his bad decision making.
It’s disappointing to see the mental lapses Garoppolo was sometimes plagued with in 2019, and this has not seen any development. He would be one of the elite if his mental game aligned with his physical attributes.
The clock is ticking for Garoppolo. The SF 49ers are savvy with their contracts, and the team can move on from Garoppolo after 2020 without breaking the salary cap if they choose to.
Of course, if they do, it’s an admission from the team that they have to reload. But that’s something to look at closer towards the end of the season.
But if Garoppolo’s play continues as it has begun, then there’s a good chance the team may decide the future lies with a different quarterback for 2021.
