SF 49ers Trade Candidate No. 2: Safety Jaquiski Tartt

Teams rarely trade for “rental” players, whose contracts are set to expire once the season draws to a close.

Because of that, it might be difficult for the SF 49ers to move their starting strong safety, Jaquiski Tartt, who is easily the best and most consistently reliable defender the team currently has within its banged-up secondary right now.

Tartt, a pending free agent in 2021, comes with plenty of concerns of his own. He missed 19 regular-season games between 2017 and 2019. And while he’s stayed healthy over the course of this season, his prior injury history is going to lower his price tag down considerably.

Still, teams value versatile defensive backs who can play both safety spots, and Tartt fits into that category.

It’s not likely Tartt fits into San Francisco’s long-term plans, both in terms of his likely 2021 asking price and the need for the 49ers to get younger and more consistent on the back end of their defense.

Moving Tartt at the deadline would at least free up the opportunity to see if the Niners have something worth developing in third-year pro Marcell Harris, while potentially securing a modestly decent day-three draft pick in exchange for Tartt’s services over the latter half of 2020.
