No. 1: Is Nick Mullens better than Jimmy Garoppolo?

It’s kind of hard to ignore backup quarterback Nick Mullens‘ stellar performance against the Giants on Sunday. His 343-yard passing game for one touchdown and a 69-percent completion percentage resulted in a 108.9 passer rating.

Now, I am not actually stating Mullens is the better of the two signal-callers. But you have to assume Shanahan is currently trying to decide what to do with Mullens going forward if Jimmy Garoppolo starts to show any signs of decline or doesn’t live up to his $25-plus million-a-year salary.

The “lack of weapons due to injury” excuse probably won’t cut it either, since Mullens was able to operate at such a high level with a number of key players out of the offensive line up. Granted, the Giants are a less-than-stellar team, and I don’t think for even a second Mullens would be able to carry this team the way Jimmy G has at times in the past.

Shanahan will no doubt be concerned about the status of his quarterback room going forward, in a good way that is. He will have to be ready to fight off the slew of reporters who will be looking to push his buttons when it comes to the Niners signal-callers.

Though this is probably a moot point, since it’s probably safe to say the SF 49ers, as a whole, feel good about Jimmy G following his 13-3 season in his first year as a starter.

But the media will probably be a lot harsher on him going forward.

This is already looking like a very different year in comparison to the 2019 season, but Shanahan is considered one of the best coaches in the NFL, so he will no doubt be able to handle anything that comes his way.
