SF 49ers: 5 biggest unsung heroes in Week 3 win vs. Giants

No. 4: SF 49ers Tight End Ross Dwelley
All-Pro tight end George Kittle missed a second straight game with a knee injury in Week 3, and the initial thinking was No. 2 tight end Jordan Reed would be the primary beneficiary.
Especially after Reed produced 50 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the SF 49ers’ Week 2 win over the New York Jets the week before.
But Reed suffered an ankle injury on a near-touchdown grab in the first half, coming back into the game only to leave again after dealing with that injury and a knee setback.
Enter No. 3 tight end Ross Dwelley.
Dwelley, who admirably filled in for Kittle two games in 2019, didn’t shirk from the challenge and ended up being one of Mullens’ most reliable targets into the second half, finishing the game with four catches for 49 yards.
Prior to Week 3, Dwelley never had more than 29 receiving yards in a single game.
With San Francisco shorthanded at wide receiver early this season, and now dealing with injuries to multiple tight ends, it’s refreshing to see Dwelley rising to the occasion and providing some offensive firepower when needed the most.
