SF 49ers vs. NY Jets: 3 biggest threats to Niners in Week 2

No. 2: Jets’ own run defense could make 49ers ground attack struggle
On the flip side of the equation, the Niners could have a difficult time moving the ball on the ground on Sunday.
Two things can be equally true: Kyle Shanahan’s offense is built around moving the ball via the rushing game, and the Jets, despite their defensive weaknesses, are pretty good at stopping the run.
Case in point, last year according to Football Outsiders, New York ranked second in the entire league defending against the run, allowing an average of 3.3 yards per carry. Like San Francisco’s woes last year defending the run carrying into 2020, the Jets appear to be already back to defending the run well, still ranked second by Football Outsiders and coming off a loss to the Buffalo Bills where New York allowed just 3.1 yards per rush.
The 49ers being without George Kittle hurts in the pass game, yes. But he’s also one of the more effective run blockers at Shanahan’s disposal. Take away that weapon, and it’s likely the Jets defense will hone in on trying to stop two of the Niners’ best pieces on the ground, running backs Raheem Mostert and Jerick McKinnon.
San Francisco could have a tough go of things trying to establish the run game this Sunday, and that plays right into New York’s plans.
Especially if the Jets can force quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to have yet another erratic game.
