SF 49ers Free-Agent Target No. 2: EDGE Clay Matthews

It would be hard to envision veteran EDGE Clay Matthews suiting up for the SF 49ers after years of defensively tormenting them over the years with the Green Bay Packers and, most recently, the Los Angeles Rams.

At 34 years old, Matthews is no longer close to the perennial Pro Bowl-caliber player he was earlier in his career, yet he still managed eight sacks with the Rams last season on an abbreviated 13-game campaign.

Plus, one has to figure his veteran savvy could benefit a Niners defensive line comprised mostly of younger players.

Matthews reportedly turned down an offer to link up with the Denver Broncos, who also lost their top pass-rusher, Von Miller, earlier this season. Apparently, the disconnect was in contract talks, although it makes sense for Matthews to hold out for something more suitable for his family.

Particularly if the Southern California native has a chance to stay closer and within California.

The only question, however, would be if Matthews would fall into San Francisco’s comfort range, financially, considering the disconnect between him and the Broncos appeared to be about contract numbers.

Still, it wouldn’t hurt for the 49ers to make an offer at this point.
