San Francisco’s secondary performed well in training camp, which helps alleviate some of the concerns regarding this spot on the field to a certain extent. There was a nice competition for the backup strong safety, which saw newly signed veteran defensive back Johnathan Cyprien make a number of plays while generating turnovers.
Many of those were matched by interceptions from third-year pro Marcell Harris, too, making for quite the camp battle and leaving no shortage of speculation who wins the primary backup job behind the starter, Jaquiski Tartt. This pushes the undrafted rookie, Jared Mayden, well down the bubble, although he’s a prime candidate for the practice squad.
There are some questions at cornerback, though, particularly with injuries suffered by K’Waun Williams and, most recently, Jason Verrett.
Neither injury is expected to be serious.
Verrett, however, hasn’t been healthy over the vast majority of his pro career. The latest setback pushes reserve cornerbacks Ahkello Witherspoon and Dontae Johnson to the strongest side of the bubble.
