SF 49ers Wide Receiver Jauan Jennings: 4-to-1

It’s understandable why fans would be excited about wide receiver Jauan Jennings falling to the Niners in Round 7. It wasn’t hard to find mock drafts suggesting Jennings would be a day-two pick.

And if it weren’t for his sluggish 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, he probably would have been.

The problem for Jennings, though, is he hasn’t separated himself from the dwindling pack of wide receivers, which saw injuries to Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, J.J. Nelson and Richie James all go down with injuries. At times, Jennings has looked unfocused or not having grasped the intricate details of Kyle Shanahan’s offense. True, he might be capable of the splash play here and there, but Jennings is quickly becoming yet another case of a player who needed those spring workouts in a bad way.

San Francisco onboarding a number of free-agent wide receivers over the course of the past few weeks doesn’t bode well for Jennings, who doesn’t offer much of anything on special teams and hasn’t solidified himself as a short-area possession specialist.

For now, he’ll have one chance in four of making the 53-man group. If not, expect him to land on the practice squad if he makes it through waivers.
