49ers Loser: Tom Compton

Guard Tom Compton was brought in to be part of a competition for the starting right guard spot and is now in a situation where he can’t even beat the guy who isn’t even currently practicing at guard.

Compton has been very ineffectual at blocking at training camp, to the point that undrafted free agents have had success moving around the former New York Jets starter.

I’m no Kyle Shanahan, but it seems like a player who has problems stopping camp bodies is going to be a sub-par starter in the NFL.

Daniel Brunskill is the favorite to start at guard but had to move to center due to unavailable players at the position. This gave Compton a clear run to turn some heads.

Well, they’ve turned, but not for the reasons he would be hoping for.

Compton is not a starter, and it’s fair to ask if he’s even a backup for the 49ers at this point. But if Brunskill has to start the season at center, right guard may be the weak point of the offensive line.
