49ers Free-Agent Target No. 3: Cornerback Trumaine Johnson
Gone are the days when former Los Angeles Rams and New York Jets cornerback Trumaine Johnson was considered one of the top up-and-comers at his position, and his fall from grace has been notable.
But the 30-year-old defensive back who owns 23 career interceptions certainly could help alleviate some of the Niners’ concerns within their secondary.
San Francisco appears to have a starting boundary tandem in place between Richard Sherman and Emmanuel Moseley, although it’s something of a question mark why the team has continued to have faith in oft-injured cornerback Jason Verrett, who hasn’t exactly looked good during training camp so far. True, the 49ers have some depth behind Sherman and Verrett, namely with Ahkello Witherspoon, Dontae Johnson and DeMarkus Acy. But those three don’t exactly inspire a ton of confidence against a would-be serious injury.
Granted, Johnson shouldn’t be viewed as a long-term option, yet the fact he remains a free agent after a tumultuous two-year stretch in New York would lower his price tag, and it’s likely he’d sign a deal close to the veteran’s minimum.
And a simple workout wouldn’t hurt matters either, particularly if the Niners want to get some veteran presence on the depth chart.
