San Francisco 49ers: 3 players off to slow start at training camp

No. 1: 49ers Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon
Jason Verrett’s attention arose from the fact he’s actually getting time with the first-team unit during practices. From the first three days, it appears the open job alongside Richard Sherman is between him and Emmanuel Moseley.

Lost in the conversation somewhat is fourth-year cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, who was pegged as a starter early back in 2019 and eventually lost the job multiple times to Moseley over the course of the regular season and into the playoffs.
And being overlooked in camp battles isn’t a good position to be in, especially for players on the bubble.
One might have figured Monday would have been a time where Witherspoon would see snaps with the first-teamers, but he didn’t. Instead, Witherspoon primarily worked with the second-string secondary and seems to be pegged solely for backup duties.
It’s not a good look for Witherspoon, who is in a hot fight for a roster spot this training camp. While San Francisco is short on experienced depth at the position, the team could potentially move on from its third-round NFL Draft investment from 2017 at a minimal cost.
Needless to say, Witherspoon is under the microscope and will need to pick things up in camp to improve both his roster chances and placement on the depth chart.
The fact the Niners are giving Verrett, with all his injury history, more looks than Witherspoon right now doesn’t bode well for the latter.
