49ers Camp Battle No. 1: Nick Bosa vs. Trent Williams

San Francisco’s best pass-rusher against its best pass-blocking offensive lineman. There aren’t too many battles worth ranking anywhere close to this one.

Nick Bosa already proved his hype was true by finishing his rookie 2019 season as the league’s Defensive Rookie of the Year, and his sophomore campaign will only look to build upon what was already viewed as the league’s best defensive effort a season ago.

Yet things will be noticeably different in training camp this year, namely due to him having to go up against a seven-time Pro Bowler and potential future Hall of Famer, offensive tackle Trent Williams.

Williams, of course, sat out last season in hopes of a new contract with Washington. When that didn’t work out, the 49ers were able to trade for him in the wake of former left tackle Joe Staley’s retirement.

“(Nick Bosa) is going to be a pivotal tool for me to use to knock the rust off,” Williams said, via 49ers.com. “He’s probably one of the biggest challenges that I’ll face all year. He’s one of the top four or five rushers in the game. To get that work and be able to have that every day, and we can kind of bounce ideas off each other and talk each other through it. I think it’s going to work out as best-case for me, and I hope he gains just as much as I do from it.”

Yeah, that’ll be fun to watch.

If the proverbial “iron sharpens iron” statement rings true here, watching Bosa face off against Williams only serves to improve the team when they get ready for the regular season.
