No. 4: 49ers Offensive Tackle Shon Coleman

Editor’s Update: Shon Coleman has since opted out of the 2020 season.

It’s weird to think veteran tackle Shon Coleman has been with the Niners for two-plus years now and has yet to take a regular-season snap with San Francisco.

After being acquired from the Cleveland Browns for a late-round draft pick early in 2018, Coleman subsequently served as the primary swing tackle between Joe Staley and right tackle Mike McGlinchey. The only problem for Coleman that year was the 49ers offensive line stayed almost entirely healthy all season, negating the need for Coleman to take the field.

During the preseason in 2019, Coleman suffered a serious ankle injury that landed him on season-ending injured reserve, opening up the door for younger linemen Daniel Brunskill and Justin Skule to assume swing-tackle roles.

While Brunskill is now pegged to potentially start at right guard, Skule and 2020 rookie Colton McKivitz appear to be the favorites to earn the primary backup tackle job.

Coleman, as a result, could easily be pushed off the roster.

Parting ways with Coleman would cost San Francisco just $137,500 in dead money against $825,000 in cap savings, so one might assume the Niners wouldn’t be afraid to go this route if he can’t beat out some of the younger, cheaper options on the roster.
