49ers vs. Seahawks Offseason Battle: Free Agency

NFL teams all have different ideas on how to approach NFL free agency. Free agency is always very interesting with regards to how much teams are willing to overpay players and how the teams build their roster. Some teams prefer to build through the NFL Draft and some prefer free agency.

Neither team made any huge moves here during the offseason. The Seahawks were looking to potentially lock up star pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney, and as of the time of this writing, Clowney has not signed anywhere just yet. Depth edge rusher Ezekiel Ansah wasn’t brought back after his one-year stint in Seattle either.

San Francisco, meanwhile, traded away Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner for draft capital and to save some much-needed cap space, then elected to sign some under-the-radar free agents such as former New York Jets offensive guard Tom Compton. The 49ers lost wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders to NFC rivals, the New Orleans Saints, yet signed former Los Angeles Chargers wideout Travis Benjamin to help with depth.

Retaining defensive tackle Arik Armstead and safety Jimmie Ward, however, was vital to the Niners’ chances. Trading for left tackle Trent Williams from Washington helped matters, too, although one wouldn’t call it a free-agent move.

Those are the kind of signings both teams have done for the most part. San Fransico is also trying to lock down tight end George Kittle to a long term contract, too, to prevent his would-be free-agent departure in 2021 from happening.

Overall, both teams are very even with what they were able to do in free agency. Neither team signed a very high-profile free agent.

In this section, both teams are even.
