“If Frank Gore isn’t the top 49ers running back on this list, this guy is an idiot!”

The San Francisco 49ers have had a ton of talented running backs dawn the red and gold uniform over the years, but these 10 players are the best to ever do it. Each of these players has left behind a legacy that will stick with Niners fans until the end of time.

I’ll get it out of the way quickly: Of course, the franchise’s all-time leading rusher, Frank Gore, is the top dog on this list. And, no, it is not up for debate, but we’ll go into more detail on his illustrious career later in the article especially comparing what he was able to do alongside some of the other great San Francisco runners over the team’s storied history dating back to 1946.

Where we may disagree are from spots two through 10, so let’s dive in.

Some Honorable mentions:

  • Delvin Williams (1974-1977)
  • Kevan Barlow (2001-2005)
  • Wilbur Jackson (1974-1979)
  • Charlie Garner (1999-2000)
  • Tom Rathman (1986-1993)

A case can be made for every one of these players to make the list, but sadly some had to be left off. This isn’t to say I don’t think they’re memorable players. They just aren’t in the top 10 but still deserve a little bit of recognition.
