49ers training camp: 5 under-the-radar stories to watch in 2020
No. 2: The benefits of team stability for 49ers
One question that’s very prominent in a lot of minds is how can the 49ers go one better in 2020 and get that sixth Super Bowl, which has eluded them for over a quarter of a century now?
The answer, and one fans don’t seem to be aware of yet, is the high amount of starters on offense and defense that the team will be bringing back this season.
Of the 22 starters on offense and defense, and despite the salary cap creeping up on the team, 18 have returned to once again play for San Francisco in 2020.
The exceptions are defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, who was traded to the Indianapolis Colts for a first-round pick, left tackle Joe Staley who retired, wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, who signed with the New Orleans Saints, and guard Mike Person who was released.
This will be an exceptionally challenging season where the normal chances to build chemistry among new players will be limited and perhaps continuously interrupted.
For the 49ers, getting 18 of their 22 starters back is big for their Super Bowl aspirations.
As an added bonus, two of the assumed new starters should fit right in. Presumptive left tackle Trent Williams has experience with head coach Kyle Shanahan and his system while at the Washington Redskins, while the surprising Daniel Brunskill is the favorite to take over at right guard.
