Running Backs Currently on the 49ers Depth Chart

A year ago, some may have questioned whether or not running back Raheem Mostert would make the 53-man roster. All he ended up doing was leading San Francisco on the ground during the regular season with 772 rush yards.

Few predicted that.

Yet the 49ers depth chart at the position has far more questions heading into training camp:

* denotes rookie

Mostert has the inside track to be RB1 in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. Although last year proved the head coach wouldn’t merely lock in on one runner based on the traditional starter/reserve roles. One week, Tevin Coleman would get the start. The next week would go to Mostert and so on.

Shanahan’s tendencies to find and develop unheralded rushing talent, Mostert and Matt Breida the latest two examples, could also prove to be reasons why both Salvon Ahmed and JaMycal Hasty are players to watch in camp later this summer.

And while the initial prognosis would point to both undrafted free agents being tabbed for the practice squad, don’t sleep on the idea one, perhaps both make the 53-man roster.

For that to happen, though, there would have to be some shakeups on the 49ers depth chart.
