No. 5: The 49ers’ Early Years (1946 – 1963)
San Francisco’s standard uniforms went through a number of slight changes between 1946 and 1963. But the vast majority of jerseys featured a red top with white pants, not totally unlike the same jerseys featured in the mid 1990s.
In 1957, the 49ers’ helmets finally featured a gold color, switching away from a primarily white look the team had carried since 1948.
Just think, in 1946 the Niners had white leather helmets. And there was even a red helmet seen in a game in 1950. Think about that.
This classic look would return down the road despite the various changes seen during San Francisco’s first 17 years of existence.
