No. 1: Tight End Jordan Reed

The idea of bringing aboard another tight end after the 49ers’ selection of Charlier Woerner in Round 6 of the NFL Draft sounds kind of counterproductive.

But considering Woerner managed a mere 34 receptions for 376 yards over four seasons at Georgia and isn’t much of a pass-catching threat, one can see why the Niners could be intrigued about this idea still.

Woerner will help as a blocker, yes. Few teams, however, are defensively equipped enough to handle two pass-catching tight ends. And the reports of San Francisco having some initial interest in former Washington Redskins tight end Jordan Reed suggests head coach Kyle Shanahan might want someone to pair with the 2019 All-Pro, George Kittle.

Reed, who’ll turn 30 years old before the start of the regular season, missed all of last year with a concussion, so there are injury concerns to worry about.

Yet that could serve to keep Reed’s asking price relatively low. And while such a transaction would shake up the depth chart behind Kittle, namely affecting Woerner, Ross Dwelley and Daniel Helm, it’s not hard to envision a player like Reed providing somewhere around 500 receiving yards as a No. 2 pass-catching option at the position.

Shanahan could surely draw up some provocative plays with someone like Reed and Kittle on the field at the same time.
