Running Back

Lock: Kyle Juszczyk, Jerick McKinnon, Raheem Mostert

Strong Bubble: Tevin Coleman, Jeff Wilson Jr.

Weak Bubble: Salvon Ahmed, JaMycal Hasty

Long Shot: Josh Hokit

San Francisco shook up its running back room by trading away one of its leading backs the last three seasons, Matt Breida, to the Miami Dolphins during the NFL Draft.

This cleared a logjam to a point, but there could be some notable changes coming.

One of those is the veteran, Tevin Coleman, who survived any thoughts of being a cap casualty. But given he’s owed zero in guaranteed money this season, his future is anything but guaranteed. Money is also a factor in Jerick McKinnon’s immediate future, too. After reworking his contract, cutting him would actually cost the 49ers $4 million in dead money with negative savings of just over $1 million.

If McKinnon is healthy after missing the last two years following a 2018 ACL tear, he’ll be on the roster.

Undrafted running backs Salvon Ahmed and JaMycal Hasty could be fun to watch this offseason, potentially having a similar ascent to the pro ranks like Breida did back in 2017. Hasty has some excellent one-cut elusiveness, while Ahmed getting a three-year deal indicates some serious interest on the part of San Francisco.
