Loser: Defensive End Solomon Thomas

One of the primary to-be beneficiaries stemming from the trade of Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts was the 49ers’ top pick from the 2017 NFL Draft, defensive end Solomon Thomas.

Entering year four of his pro career, Thomas figured to be a key part of the rotation needed to replace Buckner. And while Thomas’ efforts up to this point have been largely underwhelming, the thought of him primarily being used along the inside of the defensive line could have potentially salvaged what has otherwise been a disappointing career.

But that was before San Francisco used its top pick in the draft on South Carolina defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw.

The Niners will look to Kinlaw to grow into the void Buckner left behind, also giving the rookie first rounder every available opportunity to become a three-down player with Pro Bowl potential written all over him.

Even if Kinlaw doesn’t develop into this right away, Thomas won’t be seeing the notable increase in snaps he would have otherwise expected, instead being relegated again to a rotational player and likely off the team in 2021.
