Winner: Running Back Tevin Coleman

The 49ers entered the NFL Draft with quite the logjam at running back, including players like Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, Jerick McKinnon, Matt Breida and Tevin Coleman.

Coleman and his zero in guaranteed money for 2020 became the subject of possible cut suggestions during the offseason, which would have cost San Francisco nothing in dead salary cap. And despite Kyle Shanahan having a notable preference for the tailback, the Niners’ previous financial restraints could have pointed towards the team moving on from the veteran.

Likewise, Breida was the subject of potential moves this offseason, even after the 49ers picked up his restricted free-agent tender.

Instead of moving on from Coleman, though, the Niners moved Breida to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick, which was then used on West Virginia offensive lineman Colton McKivitz.

And while the 49ers grabbed some undrafted free-agent running backs later, they made zero draft additions to support the position.

Barring some unforeseen moves, Coleman’s future in San Francisco looks awfully safe for now.
