No. 1: Running Back Matt Breida

Dante Pettis’ trade speculation is based off an analyst’s mock draft. Solomon Thomas’ speculation is based off last year’s rumors.

Running back Matt Breida, however, has recently been linked to trade rumors, at least according to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, whose pulse on the team is arguably as good as any local beat writer.

Like Pettis, Breida appeared to fall out of favor with Kyle Shanahan late in 2019, giving up would-be carries to fellow running backs Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman. With those two poised to return, and the 49ers getting veteran tailback Jerick McKinnon back from a two-year injury, one has to wonder if Breida is now the odd man out.

San Francisco applied the second-round franchise-tag tender on Breida, which was something of a shock. It’s not likely another team would be willing to dish out a Round 2 pick to offer Breida a qualifying contract, which the 49ers could either match or command said pick. But the Niners could always offer up Breida in a trade of sorts.

And there are some teams potentially interested.

Breida arguably has the most upside value of the three players listed here. It isn’t like he had a complete on-field meltdown or received harsh criticism from Shanahan.

Instead, Breida appears to merely be an excess commodity, and it wouldn’t be shocking at all if San Francisco tried taking advantage of that during the draft.
