No. 3: Wide Receiver Dante Pettis

There isn’t necessarily a ton of evidence to suggest the 49ers would trade third-year wide receiver Dante Pettis as part of a draft package this offseason. And while his 2019 season was wholly underwhelming, it seems premature to suggest head coach Kyle Shanahan is giving up on the team’s former second-round investment.

Still, that doesn’t change Shanahan offered up some provocative comments about Pettis early in 2019, then kept him off the active roster for the Super Bowl last February.

Perhaps this is what convinced ESPN’s Bill Barnwell to list Pettis as part of a package the Niners implemented in a proposed draft-day trade with the Miami Dolphins:

"The 49ers have two first-round picks but don’t pick again until Round 5 (No. 156). They’re almost surely going to trade away at least one of those two first-rounders for multiple selections to recoup some of the picks they traded away. The Dolphins have more picks to work with than any team, and assuming they use the No. 5 pick on a quarterback, this would be a move up to grab a left tackle or one of the top wide receivers in this class before their other first-round selection comes up at No. 18. They would also be taking a shot on Pettis, who was publicly buried by Kyle Shanahan last season and might need a change of scenery."

Pettis still has enough of the potential factor in his favor, and the Dolphins need pass-catching help for a would-be high-picked quarterbacking investment.

San Francisco won’t recoup its losses in total, but at least the team could gain an advantage of sorts in return.
