Yes, John Lynch is dialing up the phones for some additional trades, and he’s able to make a move for the New York Giants in this case, who move up to No. 31 overall for the right to ensure Minnesota safety Antoine Winfield Jr. winds up being the pick.

And it nets the 49ers yet another third-round selection in the process.

After passing up on a wide receiver with their first pick in the NFL Draft, the 49ers do so again with their second selection again, this time reinforcing the secondary.

Cornerback is a pressing issue. Aside from the veteran, Richard Sherman, San Francisco’s boundary corners produced some up-and-down efforts over the course of 2019. Additionally, Sherman, Ahkello Witherspoon and K’Waun Williams are all entering contract years, prompting the idea the Niners need to make some aggressive moves to solidify the long-term needs.

While he might no longer be in Round 1 discussion, Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs fits the bill for what the 49ers would like in an up-and-coming prospect on the outside. Diggs is rangy, has excellent ball skills and doesn’t lack for coverage speed on the back end.
