Ranking 49ers 10 best second-round NFL Draft picks of all time
No. 3: Cornerback Eric Wright
Coming in at No. 3 on the list is cornerback Eric Wright, who played all 10 of his NFL seasons as part of the 49ers and won four Super Bowl championships.
The 49ers selected Wright with the 40th overall selection in the 1981 NFL Draft out of Missouri, and the former Tiger became an immediate starter for that Super Bowl-winning squad, grabbing three interceptions and recovering two fumbles as a rookie.
Wright went on to start almost every game in played in over the course of his decade with the team, although several of his seasons — including his sophomore season as well as consecutive years in 1986 and 1987 — were shortened by injury. His late-career output also saw him playing in fewer games and starting less and less.
He finished his career with 18 interceptions and five fumble recoveries, along with three additional interceptions and another fumble recovery in 12 career playoff games. He also scored two career defensive touchdowns.
Unlike Keena Turner, Wright was often considered among the best in the league as his position, as he was named to two Pro Bowls (1984 and 1985) and was a first-team All-Pro in 1985.
Although he missed much of his prime due to injury, Wright was still a productive member of the 49ers throughout the entirety of his career. He is among the best players on the 1980’s dynasty teams and one of the best second-round NFL Draft picks in team history.
