2020 NFL Draft: 32-pick Round 1 mock with 49ers selecting twice
By Peter Panacy
The Detroit Lions’ decision to move cornerback Darius Slay to the Philadelphia Eagles creates a notable void in head coach Matt Patricia’s secondary. And one could make the argument the secondary should have been Detroit’s top priority in the NFL Draft before Slay was traded anyway.
Fortunately, this year’s draft is pretty deep at cornerback, particularly over the first few rounds. But no one is as promising or has a higher ceiling than Ohio State cornerback Jeffrey Okudah.
Okudah, 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, has the body type. And he’s equally adept in both press-man coverage and in zone situations, making him an adaptable piece for Detroit’s defense.
In an ideal world, the Lions would probably like to trade out of this spot to maximize Okudah’s value. But considering their defensive needs and the fact Okudah is easily the top cornerback in this year’s class, sitting in place and grabbing a player they need is a great way to go for the Lions.
