San Francisco 49ers: 3 possible outcomes of the Travis Benjamin signing
The signing of wide receiver Travis Benjamin brings about numerous possibilities for the San Francisco 49ers in 2020. What might some of those outcomes be?
On the March, the San Francisco 49ers signed veteran wide receiver Travis Benjamin to a one-year deal as reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Benjamin spent the last four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers. But his 2019 season was cut short due to injury, after appearing in only five games.
Benjamin was a fourth-round (100th overall) pick of the Cleveland Browns back in the 2012 NFL Draft. He spent his first four seasons with the Browns, including one under then-Cleveland offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who now makes his home with the Niners as head coach. During Benjamin’s time with the Browns, and within a crowded wide receiver position group, he ended up with punt and kick return duties. And he excelled as a return man.
However, his breakout season as a receiver came in 2015. That season, he recorded 68 receptions for 966 yards and five touchdowns. It boosted his value for free agency, and the following season, he signed a four-year deal with the Chargers.
Benjamin’s last four seasons with the Chargers, however, did not produce the numbers he likely hoped for. He never eclipsed 700 yards receiving in any of those four campaigns. This was in large part due to various injuries that plagued him during that time.
He looks to have a fresh start with the 49ers, reuniting again with Shanahan. But at this point, he is still a wild card. Several possible results could happen with him during the 2020 season.
Here are three possible outcomes.
