No. 1: Dante Pettis Remains an Afterthought in 2020

The 49ers are widely expected to make some notable changes at wide receiver this offseason. In a way, they’ve already started by adding former Los Angeles Chargers wideout Travis Benjamin, who’ll likely compete with Marquise Goodwin for the deep-threat role in training camp.

With two picks in Round 1 of the 2020 NFL Draft, it would be shocking if neither of them was used on a wide receiver in such a deep class.

And while other wide receivers, such as Trent Taylor and Jalen Hurd, are also in the mix after a forgotten 2019 campaign, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Niners took advantage of the class depth by targeting a wideout again on day three.

What this means for Pettis is twofold. Either the added competition boosts his desire to come back better than anything seen, previously, or he winds up being in a similar role seen last year: a situationally used wide receiver who is relegated to the back end of the regular-season roster.

The latter portion of this outcome seems to be the one with the biggest chance. San Francisco isn’t merely going to waive Pettis right now or anytime soon, given the fact he’s still on a rookie contract and has some hopeful upside remaining. Plus, at least he’s proven some value at the NFL level, whereas any added rookie (Hurd, for that matter, too) hasn’t played a single down at the pro ranks.

If waiving Pettis is in the cards, it’s something that won’t happen until a year from now. Until then, unless he’s traded, he’ll be on the roster in 2020.
