The 49ers parted ways with veteran guard Mike Person and brought aboard Tom Compton. But the strongest candidate to start in Person’s stead this season is the 2019 backup, Daniel Brunskill.

Yet Brunskill’s future could go beyond just being an interior starter. Left tackle Joe Staley is winding down his storied career, and it wouldn’t be shocking at all to see San Francisco push Brunskill into a tackle role in 2021 or 2022.

That means grabbing an interior player with starter’s potential would be wise on day three of the NFL Draft.

If the Niners want to find some value, San Diego State’s Keith Ismael would be an excellent target in Round 5 of the draft. At 6-foot-3 and 309 pounds, Ismael is probably no more than an interior lineman. And while he has most of his experience playing center, the ability to bump out to guard is there.

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein pointed out how Ismael was a much better fit in a zone-style blocking scheme, which is precisely what Kyle Shanahan operates. Ismael’s ability to pull and execute blocks on the move suggests he’d be a nice fit, first as a reserve option and then as a potential starting candidate in a couple of seasons.
