San Francisco 49ers: 5 players who could extend their contracts in 2020
No. 3: CB K’Waun Williams
This situation is for almost exactly the same reason as the first two names on the list: slot cornerback K’Waun Williams is an important part of the 49ers defense, and he deserves to be rewarded and kept around for a few more seasons.
One day after exercising the option on Kyle Juszczyk, the Niners also picked up the final year of Williams’ current deal, which added a little over $3 million to the team’s salary for 2020. For a position that is essentially a starter in today’s NFL, that’s a pretty team-friendly number.
This isn’t to say the 49ers should break the bank for Williams, either, even though Pro Football Focus had him graded as a top-10 cornerback in terms of overall defensive grade in 2019. Williams’ 80.3 overall grade and 77.6 in coverage were among the best in the league, be it for boundary or slot corners.
Heading into his sixth season, it would make a lot of sense for the 49ers to lock Williams into the organization for a few more seasons, as keeping the strong defensive core intact could be vital to the team continuing to contend for championships in the coming years.
