49ers Re-Sign OT Shon Coleman to a One-Year Deal

While this might be viewed as an extreme under-the-radar signing, it does point out something provocative.

Late Monday, Matt Maiocco reported the Niners were bringing back swing tackle Shon Coleman on a one-year deal despite the veteran backup suffering a serious season-ending ankle injury during the 2019 preseason.

Last year, San Francisco employed two backup tackles: Daniel Brunskill and Justin Skule, who both saw action. Yet Maiocco previously hinted at the possibility Brunskill might compete with Mike Person for the starting right guard position this season — a move made even more plausible with the fact the 49ers owe Person zero in guaranteed money in 2020.

Re-signing Coleman for at least another year would lend credence to the idea Brunskill has a path leaning towards a significant starting role this season, while Person’s future could be in doubt.

One might expect Skule and Coleman to be two primary reserves entering training camp.
