There are a number of wide receivers who could convince the 49ers not to trade down of the No. 31 overall pick in the NFL Draft, and Clemson’s Tee Higgins is among that group.

As mentioned earlier, Kyle Shanahan hasn’t preferred size over speed and separation abilities in his wide receivers. Yet that doesn’t mean he’ll avoid big-bodied targets, particularly if they check off the boxes Shanahan does like: speed and route-running skill. After all, one just needs to remember how Shanahan enjoyed having veteran wideout Julio Jones when the now-Niners head coach was the Atlanta Falcons’ offensive coordinator in 2015 and 2016.

Higgins checks off those boxes, being an exceptional route runner from anywhere on the field, while also using his long legs to create speedy strides capable of outrunning the fastest defensive backs.

And at 6-foot-4 and 216 pounds, there’s no doubting Higgins would provide the big-target need San Francisco still has.

Especially in the red zone.

Higgins might be available at No. 31 overall, which means the 49ers can either decide between grabbing him at that spot or perhaps taking a trade-down gamble while hoping he slips into the early stages of Round 2.
