Wide receiver is a need for San Francisco, yes. But considering the depth, it wouldn’t be out of the question to see John Lynch focus on the secondary first, then hoping some late-round finds help round out the receiving corps.

Like Cameron Dantzler, Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs has the intangibles to suggest he can be a long-term fit in the 49ers’ Cover 3 defense, working well along the boundaries against the bigger-bodied wideouts he’ll face at the NFL level.

At 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, Diggs won at the college level by producing four interceptions over his last two years with the Crimson tide, using his ball skills and converging speed to record an additional eight passes defended. In addition to flourishing in zone schemes, Diggs can also hold his own exceptionally well in press-man coverage, staying with his receiving target through most complex routes.

Some overaggressive tendencies could cause him to fall in the draft. But it’s still likely he’ll wind up going a few picks before the Niners are poised to select in Round 1.

If Diggs falls, however, it wouldn’t be shocking at all to see San Francisco make the talented corner its first pick in 2020.
