No. 2: A Team Without a First-Round Pick Gets Desperate
There’s going to be a whirlwind between teams and free-agent players this offseason, particularly at quarterback where a lot of well-known signal-callers could be donning new jerseys in 2020.
Depending on how that pans out, there still are going to be a number of quarterback-needy teams seeking future options on draft day.
And remember, quarterback values always increase between the NFL Combine and the draft itself.
There are four teams currently without a first-round pick: the Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers, Houston Texans and Los Angeles Rams. Chicago and Pittsburgh could both be looking for a quarterback find, as the Bears may want to finally move on from the underachieving Mitchell Trubisky, while the Steelers have yet to identify a long-term replacement for Ben Roethlisberger.
It’s possible either one of those two teams want to get into the back end of Round 1, perhaps outbidding each other to land a pick, let’s say the Niners’ No. 31 overall selection.
The Bears own two picks in Round 2, Nos. 43 and 50 overall, while the Steelers don’t pick again until their two selections in Round 4. If Pittsburgh wants to trade up, it’ll surely include a good haul of 2021 picks.
Either way, John Lynch could be able to work some trade magic and pull the most out of teams like the Bears or Steelers’ desperation this April.
