No. 3: Running Back Tevin Coleman
Like Mike Person, running back Tevin Coleman is in the same situation, contractually.
Coleman is due just over $4.8 million in 2020, but none of it is guaranteed and the 49ers would generate that much money in cap savings with zero in dead money if they decide to part ways with the 26 year old after just one season in San Francisco.
From a financial standpoint, it makes sense. Plus, outside from a stellar four-touchdown game against the Carolina Panthers in Week 8 and a dominant effort versus the Minnesota Vikings in the divisional round, Coleman was essentially average amid a crowded offensive backfield.
Granted, the Niners’ situation at the position is far more complex entering this offseason. Running back Matt Breida appeared to fall out of favor late in the year, and fellow runner Jerick McKinnon (knee) has spent the last two seasons on injured reserve. But cutting McKinnon would cost the 49ers $4 million in dead money, whereas Coleman carries zero in that category.
On the other hand, though, Kyle Shanahan seems to have an affinity for Coleman and regularly started him despite otherwise so-so production.
In this case, however, the financials ultimately force Shanahan’s hand and lead to Coleman finding employment elsewhere this upcoming season.
