It’s important to note quarterback values always seem to increase leading up to draft day. Case in point, the New York Giants arguably reached for former Duke quarterback Daniel Jones by grabbing him sixth overall in the 2019 NFL Draft when many a big board had him pegged in the 20s.

The 2020 quarterbacking carousel around the league is going to have plenty of influence on many a team’s draft plans this April, so it’s impossible to accurately predict what happens. Yet there’s a good chance a team looks at the 49ers’ top pick in the draft and wants to trade into the end of Round 1, giving John Lynch an opportunity to accrue more draft capital in the process.

One of those players who could be the subject of a draft-day trade is Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm.

Fromm didn’t exactly do himself any favors at the NFL Combine, as NFL.com’s Chad Reuter pointed out when looking at his so-so efforts:

"Unfortunately, these deficiencies were exacerbated by the side-by-side comparison with the other well-known quarterback prospects competing on Thursday night. Does this mean Fromm will fail in the NFL? Absolutely not. He is a guy I’d take on my team any day, and I suspect he’ll have a solid career. However, his combine workout did not push him into the elite category of this QB class."

It now seems more likely Fromm dips down late into Round 1, perhaps now viewed as an early day-two prospect.

For teams without a first-round pick and possibly in need of a quarterback, such as the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears, looking at Fromm as an option might require a trade up in the draft, and the 49ers could easily be a willing partner.
