Virginia wide receiver Joe Reed doesn’t have much to prove at the NFL Combine in terms of speed. All one needs to do is look at how blazing fast he was during this impressive 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in November of 2018 to understand how explosive he can be:

Reed had five kickoff returns for touchdowns during his collegiate career, and he was productive enough on offense, too, likely pushing his way into Round 4 discussion during the NFL Draft.

The 6-foot-1, 215 pounder instead caught eyes at the NFL Scouting Combine with an impressive 22 bench reps of 225 pounds, which showcased his strength to pair with his already notable speed abilities.

Tack on his special teams abilities, and one can see how the 49ers would be interested.

Granted, the Niners currently don’t possess a fourth-round pick, should that be where Reed ends up being selected. But if San Francisco trades out of its first pick and somehow lands a Round 4 selection, or Reed falls into Round 5, it’s hard to fathom Kyle Shanahan completely avoiding the deep-field threat.

Especially after showcasing some strength at the combine.
