NFL hot seat: 5 coaches who’ll start 2020 in danger of being fired
By Peter Panacy
No. 1: Adam Gase, New York Jets
Boy, 49ers fans should be happy the team never signed now-New York Jets head coach Adam Gase back in 2015 despite there being reports it nearly happened.
Gase’s first season with the Miami Dolphins in 2016 was successful, leading his team to a 10-6 record. But the following two years sub-par results, leading to he and the Dolphins parting ways in 2019 and the New York Jets bringing him aboard.

It’s not hard to see the rationale. After all, Gase was instrumental in an offensive coordinator role with the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears before accepting the Miami job, and his work with quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Jay Cutler was solid enough to convince Jets brass he could do something similar with New York’s top investment from the 2018 NFL Draft, Sam Darnold.
But Gase’s opening season in New York got off to a horrendous start, which included Darnold missing three games with mono and the Jets starting off 1-7.
A halfway decent finish to the year, which culminated in a 7-9 season record, was probably the sole reason why Gase wasn’t fired at the end of 2019. Yet it doesn’t change the fact his offense ranked second worst in the league in scoring over the course of the season.
As is the case with Matt Nagy and Mitchell Trubisky, Gase’s placement on the NFL hot seat this year will largely hinge on how he handles Darnold heading into 2020.
If those results are less than satisfactory, there’s no reason to suspect Gase will fall victim to the NFL hot seat, too.
