No. 4: Another Addition to the Hot Boyzz

The “Hot Boyzz”, which for the uninitiated are the 49ers linebacking corps, would also benefit from an added depth piece. Linebacker David Mayo, who played for the New York Giants last season, could be a real asset to the 49ers defense in 2020.

The 49ers signed Mayo in March of 2019. However, he did not make the final 53-man roster before the start of the 2019 season.

The former 2015 fifth-round pick was highly forgettable in his first four seasons with the Carolina Panthers outside of his special teams prowess. But in 2019 after signing with the Giants, he started to establish himself as a solid run-stopper. In 2019, Mayo played in all 16 games and finished the season with 80 tackles (50 solo) and two sacks.

He would be great for the linebacker rotation and could provide some of that needed help on special teams again.

And clearly, if Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch brought him in after four unproven seasons a year ago, they would not have a problem bringing him back after one proven season.

Especially if San Francisco wants to fully clear out any concerns it might have regarding depth at linebacker heading into 2020.
