San Francisco 49ers: Post-Super Bowl 54 7-round mock NFL Draft
By Peter Panacy
No way. Another trade?
Well, of course. It wouldn’t be shocking at all to see the 49ers execute multiple trade downs during the NFL Draft, and the move with the Bears generates another chance for John Lynch to move down to acquire even more assets.
In this case, it’s with the Buffalo Bills, who look to grab a wide receiver of preference, leapfrogging the also-wide receiver-needy Philadelphia Eagles picking at No. 53. Even the Dallas Cowboys (No. 51) could be in play for a wideout, making the Niners an ideal trade partner.
Plus, Buffalo has more than enough trade assets to make a deal work.
By moving down four spots, Lynch adds a fourth-round pick and still has a chance to grab yet another key piece, letting other teams fight over a wide receiver.
While safety is a major need, one can look at cornerback as another position to fill via the draft. Veteran corner Richard Sherman will turn 32 years old this March, and he’s also entering the final year of his current contract with San Francisco. It would be one thing if the 49ers could bank on other boundary corners, namely Ahkello Witherspoon and Emmanuel Moseley to fill the void. But neither has truly solidified himself as a bona fide long-term replacement.
Instead, the 49ers add a tall and lanky cornerback in Round 2, grabbing Mississippi State’s Cameron Dantzler.
Dantzler, 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, needs to add some more weight in order to present a more physical challenge at the line of scrimmage. But as a zone corner, he’s excellent and displayed some solid reaction skills when receiving targets break away.
And those moments were rare in 2019.
With their first two picks in the 2020 NFL Draft, the 49ers have hopefully found long-term fixes for the secondary.
Now it’s time to turn attention to the offense.
