3 biggest concerns facing Jimmy Garoppolo, 49ers in 2020

No. 1: Effectiveness at Seeing the Field
It’s partially related to the interceptions. But at times, Jimmy Garoppolo not targeting wide-open targets is a bit of a concern.
Well, actually, it’s a major concern.
This Next Gen Stats chart from the Super Bowl shows a bit of the issue:
There are only two attempts downfield of more than 20 yards. The first was the overthrow in Emmanuel Sanders’ direction, while the other was the last-hope interception towards the end of the game.
Garoppolo had down-the-field targets during the game. Granted, his pass protection wasn’t always at top level. But the fact there aren’t even a significant amount of deep-ball attempts during the game is rather concerning.
Especially considering how effective San Francisco’s rushing attack was over the course of the game.
This could be one major gripe against Garoppolo: he’s not always capable of seeing the entire field, often missing open targets.
It’s anyone’s guess whether or not that cost the 49ers a victory in Super Bowl LIV. But some of the misses certainly hurt.
At least Garoppolo has a few things upon which he can improve heading into 2020, though. And it isn’t as if the context is poised to set him up for failure. If anything, it’s the opposite.
